How to Build Wall Mounted Garage Shelves?
First of all, you’ll need these things: –
- A tape
- Spirit level
- Drill/driver
- Hand saw or band saw
- 2*4” boards
- ¾” plywood
- 2-3 inches of wood screws
Okay, did you get them? Now, follow these steps.
Step 1
Obviously, your garage will be crumpled with lots of things. So, let’s start with cleaning them.
Step 2
Then choose the exact spot where you want to install your shelf. Take the tape and ensure accurate measurement. It’ll be better if you start the measurement from one of the studs and extend it to the end of another wall stud.
Make sure to hold the tape straight; otherwise, you won’t be able to get the accurate measurement. Once you’ve got the measurement, mark it on the wall and write it down.
Step 3
Now take the handsaw or bandsaw, what you’ve got, and start trimming two boards according to the measurement you’ve got in your garage. Then cut the boards for using the sides and braces of your shelf. Make sure that they are 16 inches long.
The number of side and brace pieces depends on the length of the shelf. So, divide the entire length into 2.5 feet and cut all of them according to that.
Step 4
After that, lay the long wood and place the 16-inch wood vertically on that long wood. Now, drill two pockets into the sides of your 16-inch wood.
In order to hide your screws, drill two diagonal pocket holes into the side of your 16-inch wood. Now, secure the attachment by inserting the 2-3-inch screws through the pocket holes. Repeat the process on the other side.
Step 5
Hold the frame against the wall so that the longest frame remains next to the stud and side of the frame stays straight to the wall. Ensure the exact level and height so that the things which you’ll store on it, don’t slide off.
Once you’ve ensured all these things, start screwing the frame from the centerpiece. Take the drive, and those 2-3-inch screws then screw them thoroughly into the studs of your wall. It’s recommended to use at least two screws into per wall studs.
Step 6
Now hold the brace piece against the backboard around 2.5 feet so that it can extend out of the wall. After that, screw the brace into the pocket holes that you’ve done before. Use the 2-3 inches screw for attaching them with the backboard. Now, continue the process and attach all the brace pieces to the entire shelf’s frame. Do that along the length until you reach the other end.
Step 7
Cut a 3/4 inches sheet from the plywood by following the same measurement by using the type of saw you have. Attach the plywood on the top of your shelf with the screw. Make sure to place a screw within every 6 inches of a gap underneath. You’ll get the maximum amount of durability by doing that.
Step 8
Cut a 3/4 inches sheet from the plywood by following the same measurement by using the type of saw you have. Attach the plywood on the top of your shelf with the screw. Make sure to place a screw within every 6 inches of a gap underneath. You’ll get the maximum amount of durability by doing that.
Step 9
Lastly, you’ve to cut the boards according to the number of braces you attached to the frame. Make sure to trim the edges appropriately so that they remain at a 45-degree angle. Then place the angled end against the bottom of the shelf right next to the other brace. Now use two screws and secure the attachment with brace directly. That’s all; your wall mounted shelving unit is ready.
Installation of the Shelf
Step 1
At first, cut the 2” *4” boards and turn each of them into 6 inches. Now, hold them vertically on the wall so that they incorporate with studs accurately. Then drive the screw into your wall within every 6-10 inches of distance.
Step 2
Then take the plywood and draw some triangles. The measurement of the triangle should be 16*8*18 inches from a sheet of ¾ inches. Then attach two of these angled pieces with every single wall support. Okay, after that, cut the pieces with your handsaw or jigsaw.
Step 3
Now, lay down your 2*4-inch board and set another board with the same measurement on the top. Ensure the placement in a vertical position and then glue the sides properly. After that, press both of the brackets and clump them with board together so that the glue sets appropriately within the following day.
Step 4
Once you’ve completed that, place a 1-inch nail at the top edge of the bracket and secure it with the board. Drive a nail within every 3 inches of the length of the bracket. Continue it until you reach the end where you have glued the board between them. Make sure that the nail doesn’t come from the sides of the bracket and makes the attachment wobbly.
Step 5
Ensure a 24-inch space in a vertical position of each bracket. Now fit the triangle pieces on the support appropriately once you’ve done that use two screws of 2-inch from both sides of the bracket for using them as sturdy vertical support.
Step 6
Now trim the plywood and make it 18 inches wide so that it matches the length of your shelf accurately. Then hold the plywood against supports and find out the accurate location where you need to cut the notches out. Mark the location with a pencil and then use a saw to cut out the notches from it.
Step 7
Finally, you’ve to set the plywood on the top of the brackets that you’ve prepared and ensured that they remain flat on the wall. Drive 2-inch screws or nails through the wood and the bracket and do it at every 5-inch distance. Don’t forget to drive the screws from every single bracket. After finishing all these, your shelf will be ready.
Final Words
Actually, the accurate dimension varies with your wall space, and it’s a debated topic among lots of users. In this case, 16 inches of depth will be ideal for accommodating the height of toolboxes. That’s why we recommend you to cut the woods according to this measurement.
